The Work
The MPHC partners with communities, tribal nations, business and other sectors to enhance health and wellness. This public-private collaborative empowers people, improves lives and inspires success.
North Dakota Statewide Health Improvement Plan
The North Dakota Statewide Health Improvement Plan (SHIP) is a strategic initiative designed through extensive data evaluation and collaboration with a wide range of partners throughout the state. It is updated every five years.
Anchored by a commitment to data-driven decision-making, this comprehensive plan is the cornerstone for guiding public health strategies.
The SHIP sets forth a vision for enhancing the health and well-being of all North Dakotans by identifying health priorities that will inform the development of associated goals, objectives, and activities.
The SHIP is the North Star for the MPHC providing direction and guide rails. The MPHC’s role is to execute the SHIP to help North Dakota become the healthiest state in the nation.
The Paradigm Flip
The MPHC is taking a community centered approach, gathering ideas from the organizations and agencies within North Dakota’s communities to identify commonalities and achieve goals – collectively. The MPHC’s core consists of four Goal Groups focusing on critical areas within the SHIP: Strengthening Workforce, Cultivating Wellness, Expanding Access & Connection and Building Community Resilience. The Steering Committee oversees these groups, and the Executive Leadership team guides them.

Goal Groups
The goal groups function as specialized work groups, focusing on critical areas outlined in the SHIP. Through collaborative efforts and shared resources, they endeavor to drive measurable progress toward collective positive health outcomes objectives.
The SHIP identifies these four key priority goals:
-
Strengthening Workforce - Implement effective recruitment, retention, and training strategies so we can ensure a strong and stable workforce ready to meet the needs of North Dakotans.
-
Expanding Access & Connection - Enhance well-being by expanding access to essential healthcare services, such as primary care, cardiac care, oral health care, cancer screening, and chronic disease management and prevention. Additionally, support strategies to actively connect individuals to referrals for services and programs that support their holistic well-being, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to receive the care and support they need.
-
Cultivating Wellness - Further the collective commitment to improving the health outcomes of all our communities by investing in developing strategies to: Strengthen childhood opportunities and reduce adverse childhood experiences, Decrease occupational injuries, Curb tobacco and e-cigarette usage, and Enhance the length and quality of life of tribal populations and older adults.
-
Building Community Resilience - Build capacity and enhance readiness for infectious disease response, emergency preparedness, and response, and strengthen overall community resilience, while being responsive to the challenges of rural communities.
